Rare 1960s Brazilian ‘Costa Brava Clube’ Chairs

History of the Chairs In 1962, the renowned modernist architect, Renato Menescal and his brother Ricardo were working on the development of a new leisure club for the rich and famous on an outcrop of rock, just off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Given the architect and Brazil’s appetite for modernism the club took on a archetypal 60s design ethic. To compliment the surroundings and structures, the chairs were designed for the members to laze around the club’s swimming pools and saunas, and have been in use ever since it first opened.

About the Chairs

200 were designed and manufactured, the majority of which remain in use in use today. We have managed to exclusively acquire a limited number of these rare originals.

Please note : these chairs are not being reproduced.

When originally acquired, the chairs needed some minor cosmetic cleaning and tidying and have since been professionally restored back to their original state and colour. Designed and manufactured in fiberglass, the chairs are extremely hard wearing and durable – having been used daily for over 40 years, inside and out. They measure 33cm high, with a 44cm diameter base (approx) and weigh approximately 4kg. While originally designed for pool side lounging they are “very cute” and desirable and so could be a beautiful addition inside or out of the home, office or for retail/leisure use.

As you would expect with modernist gems of this age, the pieces are not perfect and minor imperfections can be observed, which in part illustrates their authenticity and the fact that these chairs are more than just collectable show pieces, they are useable, fun pieces of furniture. And after all, a chair is for sitting on.
